It is with great sadness that the National Association of Jewellers announce that Jonathan Payton Smith passed away peacefully on the 18th of May at the age of 75.

Jonathan was a significant figure in the jewellery industry, holding several prestigious positions and was known throughout the international trade.

He became Managing Director of his family jewellery business at just 23 years of age and represented his company globally in Africa, Australia and the US, and as a buyer in Asia.

Jonathan was the youngest President of the British Jewellery, Giftware and Finishing Federation (now the BATF) and an honorary life member of the NAJ. He was a Guardian & Warden of the Birmingham Assay Office and a Freeman of the City of London.

He was a keen sportsman, particularly in golf and cricket, and would regularly attend (and win) the many industry golfing events. Jonathan even played for Warwickshire cricket club on their tour of the Caribbean.

David Doyle, NAJ President and friend of Jonathan shares his condolences.

"Dear Jon, with your passing, the jewellery trade has lost one of its finest characters and storytellers today. He was a devoted father and grandfather, and our thoughts and best wishes are with his family at this difficult time."
