The Ethics of International Development: A Video on Voluntourism

Through the Ethics in International Engagement & Service-Learning Project at the University of British Columbia, students composed this compelling video that considers:

  • What do you think you’re doing?
  • What are you really doing?

(When you serve abroad). It raises important questions and will certainly be useful in challenging other students and would-be volunteers as they consider international engagement opportunities. The EIESL Project website above also includes links to numerous additional, related resources.

  1. This was great. Great for students and seasoned travelers as well. As a travel “change” agent, many of the points covered in your video, are the same points I communicate to my volunteer travel participants. I tell them “they will receive more than they can ever receive.” Lets stay connected, I am encouraged by your work and want to hear more. Thank you !!

I agree Sallie. It’s so common to hear prospect volunteers to about ‘their’ experience, and what’s in it for ‘them’. This is a great video with intelligent food for thought.

  3. Green says:

Needs lot of reviews of the existing NGO s and also have to look into the development of dependency , If a project cannot self sustain after a certain period it has also to be looked into . Understanding of the host country is also very important

  4. Bravo a must watch not only for students!
